I’d have some of the details worked out in my head, David but similar to you, I tend to just let the story flow out as I’m writing. There might be key scenes I’ve worked out that are pivotal to the overall plot, but 99% of the story came to me as I was writing which makes it that more exciting for me as a writer!

The Honor Harrington series! I only started reading it early in the new year and I haven't been able to put these books down. I'm just about to start book 7 so I'm looking forward to getting through the rest. C'mon Manticore! Take out those Peeps!

From a disturbingly vivid dream/nightmare!
The first two chapters of Big Red are based (very loosely) on a dream I had roughly two years ago. It was so realistic and powerful that it took me a minute or two after I woke up before I realised I wasn't in some army barracks after getting shot!

I've always had an overactive imagination which I use to build (and sometimes destroy) strange, new worlds!
Whatever sticks, I play around with a bit, ask myself what story I'm trying to tell and if it works, I file it away in my memory vault.
Inspiration isn't really a problem for me, it's more the lack of free time (two children, a job, errands etc).

I was about a third of the way through a Sci-Fi thriller before I got sidetracked with editing Big Red for the review editions.
I got so immersed in the world of Big Red all over again that I... ahem... started working on Big Red 2....

Don't be too hard on yourself. Whether you write 40 words, 400 or 4000 in a single sitting, it's irrelevant. The fact that you're taking the plunge and and putting yourself out there is amazing.
Do as much can and don't be discouraged. You are AWESOME!!

Bringing the worlds that I've built in my head to life! I spent so long trying to understand the characters, surroundings and events, that it's a relief to put pen to paper (or finger tips to keyboard).
I held a review copy of my debut novel last week and it was worth the wait. I still can't believe Big Red is an actual book!

Thankfully, this is something I don't experience too often (my head is constantly churning out more ideas then I have time to jot down)!
When it does, I start by writing a single word, then another, then another and so on. Even if it's nowhere near where I want to be, it tends to get me back in the zone.
