Hey Joe,
Sorry for my late response, I forget that Goodreads exist. Kate was using the same everything, though she read it in a different position so it sounded different as the gates and filters were set up for me. I could have easily changed it once it was recorded but there was a certain tinny, uncertain quality to it that I quite liked and hoped wouldn't be taken as a technical issue because it's not like there were pops or problems. Or the files are wrong and I'd never know because Amazon's back end is worse than anyone could imagine.
The week that we did this I was afflicted with some sort of strange intranasal clicking disorder (I've never had a sinus issue) and I had to read the entire book from my back which required a pretty gnarly windscreen and mic set up (I think I used a YETI, but we may have used a normal stage SM58 through a direct box)
Hope you enjoyed it,
Mike

"The Girl Who Can Cook" started with a text message between friends. A friend of mine was murdered (IRL) and we were bouncing hateful notions back and forth about the girl who did it--supposing what we would do if she wasn't put in jail (she was, it was murder).
The book I wrote didn't have anything to do with those horrific events but it got me thinking. I wondered if we would still feel the same way if the circumstances were different, murkier. If it wasn't a clear-cut murder and if that friend was a jerk. I thought a lot about the tribal way we defend the people that we love and how it's hard to see people for what they are when you care about them.

I don't feel inspired so much as compelled. I'm the type of person who has more ideas than they know what to do with, the real problem is that I don't know which ones are worth pursuing. I live intensely, I have an extraordinary appreciation of being alive and breathing. In any given day I have more ideas than I could execute in a lifetime. I write because I'm a writer.

I am working on a second novel (literary fiction), an illustrated book of poems for adults that I like to think of as somewhere between "Everybody Poops" and "The Emerald Tablet" and various illustration/comic/art projects. I don't have kids, there's a lot of hours in the day.

If the words don't come I open a blank document and I write what I call "Shellies." These are goofy/dark/offensive/silly/whatever poems like you might find in "Where the Sidewalk Ends" but with adult themes. Sometimes all it takes is one to put me back on track, other times I bang out ten of them and start doing drawings to accompany them. As of this writing I have 600 of them, at least two or three are really good.
