Ashley Hayden I wanted to stick to the 1930s but take it to the Washington coast where I have great memories as a kid. In my novels, someone is either running from or to something (or both) and with White Ship Inn, Kathleen is trapped in her life and Rhodina is the one running to Gray River.
Ashley Hayden I listen to movie soundtracks that sound like they could work for my book if it was a movie. Since I write historical fiction, I have listened to the soundtracks for Water for Elephants, The Light Between Oceans, and The Village.
Ashley Hayden I'm currently working on my second novel, White Ship Inn. It's set in 1935 in the fictional coastal town of Gray River, Washington and focuses on the lives of Kathleen Warren, her sister Eloise, and black sisters Rhodina and Ivy.
Ashley Hayden Find writers that you admire and read as much of their stuff as you can. Listen to their audiobooks, absorb their language and style. When you begin writing, set a word goal and create a spreadsheet to track your word count each session. For me, it helps me stay focused easier. It's hard to follow this rule, but try to write every single day!
Ashley Hayden The best part about being a writer is that I use my skills and current story to escape for a while. I have a good life and don't need to escape for any negative reasons, but it's always interesting to be in a world you created.
Ashley Hayden I drink red wine, that usually helps to loosen up the block.
