Matthew C. Kruger The idea for my most recent book, my first novel, came from a few different places. But the main thing I remember is reading about David Foster Wallace's speech at Kenyon College, which was described as "anti-suicide." Which I found to be somewhat ironic as he ended up killing himself. So I took that theme and went with it: I wanted to write a book that was anti-suicide but where the people who were telling everyone not to die end up killing themselves as well. The question then becomes what the difference is between those who live and those who die--what is the disconnect between words and actions? Between a desire for life and a desire to end it? The difference, I suppose, between an anti-suicide message and the exemplary nature of a life which would never come to suicide.
