Dorene McLaughlin I pay attention to ideas in movies and books that I find unique. I contemplate how the writer came up with that avenue of thought and sometimes that generates enough "what if?" questions that I can start running with them on my own track.
Dorene McLaughlin Book Two of The Extraordinary Heroes of Uspre! I have the storyboard out and am excited about how it's coming together.
Dorene McLaughlin Find a writer's group. Develop relationships with writers you can depend on to share with, accept criticism from, and be willing to help them too. No writer is an island.
Dorene McLaughlin Escaping life for a while. But also creating something out of nothing which surprises me every time.
Dorene McLaughlin I'd like to say I write through it. I try that. But mostly I carve out time to just think things through. The issue for me isn't a lack of ideas, it's the lack of time to let them marinade and season, to bloom and grow. If I can get away for a while, I can usually think myself out of a hole.
Dorene McLaughlin Amid the chaos of a pandemic, a mother's children left home for college, ripping her heart out of her chest, taking tattered, bloody pieces with them with no regard to her ache and loneliness.

Then they came back for more...
Dorene McLaughlin The Last of Mohicans (sooo looong, but I love a good classic), Strange the Dreamer, and The Daughters of Foxcote Manor. I read just about anything that is recommended to me as a "good" book. I also did a lot of beta reading for other authors.
Dorene McLaughlin Being a writer means a lot of different stories bouncing around in my head at one time. It just so happened that one day they collided, and I realized that my main characters, amid a budding romance, could discover they had superpowers while my team of renegades could rally them into schemes that push them out of their ordinary world.
