The freedom to write whatever the heck you want. I always laugh in my book club when people say, "Why do you think this (fictional) character did this?" and then they speculate and create their own stories. My answer is always, "Because that's what the author wanted them to do." Plain and simple.

Generally when I am feeling highly emotional, whether anxious, angry, or extremely happy, I get the best ideas and jot things down. I have to be in the "mood" to write, but I make myself take notes all of the time when ideas hit.
