I found that many of the episodes I wanted to include in my book came to me at odd times--like in the middle of the night. So always keep a journal close by. Discipline yourself to write something about these episodes when they occur, even when you have to drag yourself out of bed. Organize these episodes into an outline; don't be afraid to re-organize such an outline as necessary. With such an outline, I could not get the words on paper fast enough.

I'm not sure there is a best thing. In my case, I simply felt compelled to write. Especially after starting, I found that I could not resist this compelling impulse.

Find a writers' group where you can read excerpts from your writing and listen to the excerpts from other writers in the group. I found that my participation in such a group provided valuable feedback and encouragement for me. Moreover, participation in the group motivated me to keep writing.

As a meteorologist in the Air Force, I deployed frequently throughout Central and South America. Many of the adventures portrayed in the the novel are adventures I experienced personally, to include: military operations in jungle environments, Cuban spies, undercover intelligence gathering in Panama during the years of the Noriega regime, and (most important) my encounter with the Panamanian woman who became my wife of 42 years. Anytime I shared these experiences, my friends always recommended that I write a book. That is what inspired me. So, put a little romance in your life, and read my novel.
