I enjoy William Stafford's maxim: "lower your standards and keep writing." I'm paraphrasing, but it really does help: too often my temptation would be to think I was blocked--but really, nothing is so precious that it has to be perfect right out of the gate. First drafts are just that for a reason.

A poem (or fiction piece, or essay idea) will often come to me as I'm driving--another reason behind this latest book--or while doing mundane tasks like mowing the lawn. Sometimes I hear a great phrase and think, "I've gotta use that in a piece!" So I might save it for later, and when the time comes, I'll work it into writing.

I based Driving Together around the trips my partner and I would take by car during the formative years are relationship. Poems about that relationship, the discovery of my deceased twin brother, and growing up in Kansas are strung together by the motif of driving--both physically and metaphorically, covering distance and emotional obstacles as they came.
