The freedom to go anywhere, anytime in my head. So far, I've variously toured a Jakarta slum, been to the Oscars, sailed in the Indian Ocean and visited 10 Downing Street. But the latter is the only place I've actually been to (other than in my imagination).

That's easy – the book is set in a UK tabloid newsroom. I spent nearly 40 years as a journalist and it's a world I know well. Deadline was supposed to be the first novel I wrote but somehow the idea for The Scoop muscled it aside!
