Caitlin Kunkel I know everyone says this, but you have to read to write. What I would add on is that you should read a LOT of genres and things outside of what you actually want to write/do write. When I started writing satire and humor, I only knew a few forms - expanded lists, short lists, open letters. But reading Daily Shouts on the New Yorker and McSweeney's every day, I saw that you can use diaries, recipes, emails, itineraries - there are so, so many formats that you can adapt into writing a humor or satire piece, or even use for an entire book, like Maria Semple's great "Where'd You Go, Bernadette." Reading outside of strictly the genre or format you write in can crack open your creativity in really unexpected and exciting ways.
