May I ask why you made the rich family in London Jewish As opposed to another branch of Christianity or Islam or Hinduism? Do you believe the ugly tropes about Jews? I really so much wanted to read the story but I started feeling very uncomfortable because of the characterization of the Stern family versus the main character and her very poor family who talk about their “dignity “as if the other family has none.
Andrea Hicks HI Beverly, Thank you for your question. The story is loosely based on my grandmother's life. 99 Nightingale Lane is of course, fiction. The facts of her life are far more unpalatable. I belong to a huge family, some of whom follow the Jewish faith. My extended family live in every country in the world...incredible but true. My grandfather was Jewish. I do not subscribe to unsubstantiated beliefs regarding any race or religion.. I have friends who worship in their own way...some not at all. Their beliefs are their business. I treat how I wish to be treated, no matter a person's choice of faith. I hope you will read to the end of the saga. The denouement is joyful and uplifting.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Andrea Hicks My dad was born in India in the war and it's such a fertile field for fiction. I'm loving it.

How do you get inspired to write?
Andrea Hicks Ideas come to me all the time. Unfortunately there just isn't enough time to write them all. I never seem to be short of ideas.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Andrea Hicks It's tempting to give up sometimes, but just don't. If you love it the reward is doing it. Don't think about anything else.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Andrea Hicks There are so many things, but I guess being able to allow your ideas and stories to flow. It's pretty wonderful to live through lots of different things and live in lots of different worlds without actually moving from the chair. I'm in India at the moment, for 99 Nightingale Lane, and my research is taking me everywhere. It's fab.

Andrea Hicks I think I've been lucky in that I haven't been plagued with it. Yet!
