I think most of my inspiration comes from my reading. For Defying Conventions, it was reading a book about the election that pitted James Madison against James Monroe that got the creative juices flowing.

I'm in the planning stages of a sequel for Defying Conventions that will take place 5 or six years later. Old characters will reappear, but I'm excited about some new characters who are beginning to form themselves in my imagination.

I read and loved some of David Liss's historical fiction, A Conspiracy of Paper and The Whiskey Rebels, and the latter book really renewed my interest in that period of American history. I've always wondered what would have happened if the United States had tried to continue under the Articles of Confederation, so I thought it would be interesting to explore that scenario and how it might come to that.
