David F. Noble Just write anything--even to say that you are writing anything. Soon, perhaps out of boredom, you will start to say something that interests you. With that transition, you will have hurdled the block and gotten on your way.
David F. Noble Once I was returning graded papers to a university class on technical report writing. An adult student shouted, "I want my money back!" That, obviously, is not what a professor wants to hear. When I asked the student about the problem, he said that he had taken all of the required writing classes at the university but had never been told about the corrections I was putting in his paper. What I had been doing was indicating what corrections he needed to make to have his paper acceptable to editorial departments of book publishers. At the time, I realized that there was a book opportunity here. This book, Correct Your Own English, How to Use Better and Fewer Words in Your Writing and Speaking, is that book. It presents common mistakes in writing compiled from "feedback sheets" to students during my last ten years of university teaching. The idea is that anyone who reads this book thoughtfully will be better able to correct and avoid personally many common communication errors.
