A lot of brainstorming different ideas, firstly. In the case of my novella, A Mind of His Own, it was a culmination of life experience, philosophy and my favourite genres. In the case of the book I am currently writing, the ideas have come from my love of science, and a need to develop more complex characters.

Read, or watch a good film. Usually forcing myself to write is the best start, and the inspiration comes from inside, as if building on itself with every sentence.

A full-blown Science Fiction, in the style of a Drama/Thriller. A lot of research into theoretical physics and cosmology, plus my background in astronomy, to create a world in the distant future, where interstellar travel is the cornerstone of civilization.
