What a great question! I think I'd travel to Paris at the time of the great Impressionist painters and see if I could hang around and take notes while they worked.

Actually, the greatest mystery in my own life was the subject of my non-fiction book SEARCHING FOR ANNA (2008), which tells about the disappearance of my daughter 40-something years ago. I drew heavily on my newspaper experience for my 2014 mystery novel BYLINE. At present I am working on a novel having to do with "faith" healing, not a mystery in the traditional sense, but a subject I find fascinating.

That's an easy one. Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, from Patrick O'Brian's 20 seagoing books in the Aubrey-Maturin series. From their first encounter, where the prickly Maturin is annoyed at Aubrey's tapping the rhythm at a musical affair, the two characters are so perfectly drawn that the reader seems to know them already.

I've never had a problem with writer's block. My main problem in writing is keeping up with the mental "dictation." I've even tried a voice-recognition program, but it doesn't work for me. I need to see the words on the computer screen or a piece of paper to organize my thoughts.
