I’m not good with my hands, so there is very little in the physical realm I can make which gives me a sense of pride. Most things I touch tend to fall apart. When I write a story I get to share these worlds I make up in my head and say, “I made this.” And then I know what a master crafter must feel like as they gaze upon the works they’ve wrought.

I daydream. A LOT. Anything can trigger my dreamer state — a kitchen utensil, a TV remote, the structure of grass, a puddle, even a video game. When the dreaming starts, I begin writing stories, trying to come up with the logic of the place.

When my wife and I were dating in college she was getting ready to go out, but couldn’t something she needed. As she tore apart her dorm room I looked down and picked up a penny, which I held up in triumph while declaring, “The penny gnomes took it! Look, they paid for it and everything!”
