Shirley Chan If I'm block on one thing, I usually work on something else. I also try triggering by thinking of what I need for my narrative right before I go to bed. It helps my subconscious keep working.
Shirley Chan I get a lot of satisfaction when I get just the right phrase, or the right expression. Finishing a piece is also pretty satisfying especially when you know that no one else could have done it.
Shirley Chan Write. I know this has been said many times, but get the words OUT. You can always edit and learn the rules of writing but no one can tell your stories except for you.
Shirley Chan I just finished a short story collection of Eastern fairy tales: Tales of the Jade Court. These are updated versions of stories I grew up with. They're set in the same universe (mine) and connected.

I also started a new novel and another short story for my writers' group's next anthology.
Shirley Chan I think up dialogue in my head to act/work out various scenarios. Usually this is to work through my own day-to-day issues. There are some characters who will not be denied and they speak to me insisting on having their story told.
Shirley Chan This short story came about because I was doing the "what if I won the lotto jackpot". It then turned into a very short scene about someone who had a ticket for the space lottery. The story was definitely a short story and I was able to convince my writers' group to work on an anthology together. And thus we have Infinite Dimensions: Crossroads. It's a bit of a crossroads in and of itself.
