Gena Webb That is an excellent question. The only mystery in my life is how our kitty babies always seem to know I'm opening a can of tuna or chicken and not a can of refried beans. Many, many years ago, I "rescued" a young girl. She had escaped a kidnapper and was hiding underneath a van. One of these days, one of my heroines might find herself in the exact same position (Being the rescuer, not the rescued.)
Gena Webb I put it aside and do something else. Anything else. Staring at a blank piece of paper doesn't work. I'm dating myself, because now I would stare at a blank screen, which doesn't work either. So I don't. I pet a kitty baby, watch a TV show, play a game on the iPad, take a drive in the country, or bake something. The distraction gets my head back into the game.
Gena Webb Knowing that someone else loves your book as much as you do. If they say it made them laugh, or think, or worry...not much better than that!
Gena Webb I think I was born with a writing gene, if there is such a thing. I'm always inspired to write something, but sometimes the motivation to do so needs a kick in the pants.
Gena Webb The next novel due out is "The Write Decision." There's a railroad trestle I occasionally drive under. Rickety, old, barely wide enough for one car to travel underneath, and you hold your breath every time you take that road. It's even worse at night. Your left brain says "it's going to fall on top of my car" at the same time your right brain says "this would make a great setting for a novel." Just like that...an idea becomes a novel.
Gena Webb Editing the next novel due out. Editing never stops. Just when you think you've got it perfect, your editor says "Nope!" By the time your novel is ready to be published, you're sick of reading it.
Gena Webb Be tenacious! It's easy to give up. Really. Any author can tell you that. You write the next Great American Novel (GAN) and there isn't a publisher out there who thinks your GAN is all that great. Of course, you only sent it to two publishers before you gave up, and started writing another GAN. (Or maybe that's just me.) Bottom line: If you want to see your name on the cover of a book, then you have to work at it. Eventually someone will love your novel as much as you do, and you'll get published.
