I have always felt a need to write. I started keeping a journal when I was in third grade. As you can tell from the book's description, my childhood was not ideal so writing allowed me to escape. To me, not writing is like losing a bit of my soul.

I am a big fan of memoirs and in particular, David Sedaris. After my umpteenth attempt at writing a novel, it dawned on me that my odd childhood would make for a great story. This epiphany occurred while I was sitting in a church service. I wrote the entire chapter outline on a bulletin before the doxology was finished and started writing the minute I got home.
