The best answer I know to this is that there is no such thing. Like any other job, you sometimes don't want to do it, but you should do it anyway. Some days, everything flows. Other days, it doesn't. When you look back on your draft later, you likely won't be able to tell which day was which.

The creativity of it. Seeing the pieces of a story come together like a puzzle, often when you don't know where they come from, is the fun part. I know a lot of writers plan very carefully, but Jake and the Dynamo is a story that formed as I composed it, which I think is as it should be, since it's a freewheeling romp.

Since I am a newcomer, I don't have much, but I can repeat some things I've heard from others. One piece of advice is to write every day, and to keep doing it. The days when an author could break in as a teenager by sending short stories to the pulps are over. New writers are typically much older nowadays, as people expect a lot of polish even on first novels. You have to write a lot of bad stuff before you write anything good.

I'm working on the sequel to JAKE AND THE DYNAMO, which is under the working title of DEAD TO RITES. It will involve more zany action similar to the first book, and will continue the story. More crazy characters will make their appearance. We'll also get more development of the story's serious side, including a lot of Grease Pencil Marionette's rather grim backstory, and maybe even a few hints about the history of the Dark Queen.

I couldn't really say. I've always wanted to tell stories. I remember, when I was a little kid, my brother and friends were really into video games. I never cared about the gameplay myself, but I always wanted to know what the story was behind the game, and what the rationale was for the various things you had to do to complete it. My first "book" was a pirate story I dictated to my teacher in kindergarten.

The idea came from a dream. I'd been working long hours and getting little sleep, but one night I had a particularly vivid dream about a teenage boy who got sent back to fifth grade because of an error on his transcript. There, a little girl kept picking on him, and he couldn't do anything about it because he was neither a bully nor a tattletale. I thought the idea was really funny, and it stuck in my mind until it became the germ of this book.
