My third book, and current work in progress slowly came together from a simple desire to base a story at the South Pole, where I spent two weeks doing research back in 2002.
The first main character, Phoenix, is running from a manipulative family and uses her aunt's connections to take a position as a cook for a year. There she meets Ashley, an astrophysicist who also happens to be demisexual. Once I had the characters the story came together.
They are frequently cute, funny, and a little prickly due to misunderstandings. But the unique location and situation allows them to come together, which they probably wouldn't if they were able to run farther than the opposite end of the station.
I'm hoping to finish the first full draft by the end of April or mid may, then send it back to the story development coach Em Stevens and the editor to publish by the end of June.

I have the best excuse to ignore the world for a while. There's only so much time in the day, I choose to use it for writing, reading, and my day job. I spend far less time listening to politicians and news. That doesn't mean I'm completely out of touch, but I don't spend hours on it a day.
I'm much happier for this shift toward writing!

This isn't a problem for me. Since I realized I had an idea for a book and started Dal Segno, I've wanted to write. If I get stuck, I give myself about an hour, maybe three, before reaching out to brainstorm with people. I truly enjoy the writing process, even when it is painful.
There are days when I feel is more strongly though. It feels like a pressure in my chest, often the third and fourth chakras for you spiritual folks.
My answer may change in the future, but this is accurate for the first two books.

A Marine Awakening is the story of Cam and Sharon meeting and falling in love. It takes place almost exactly 20 years before Dal Segno, and I promise has a happily for now ending.
The book takes place deep in the midst of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and before Cam's autism diagnosis. In this book we also meet Sarah and understand why she is giving a free pass in Dal Segno.
For those who wished Dal Segno was steamier, I think you'll be quite happy with A Marine Awakening!

Find your tribe. Find others writing in the same genre especially. I found my tribe through the Lesfic Love Slack group. There's a channel dedicated to aspiring writers. I also found writing buddies that give me early alpha and beta feedback, and I do the same for them. I've avoided so many debut book pitfalls because of the people on slack, I can't recommend it enough.
