Sarah carefully turned the bakery sign to Open and glanced up the street to see if the bishop was heading in this direction. Ominous dark clouds hung overhead and a cold April drizzle coated the lamppost. It looked black and sinister as it covered the sidewalk and street.
She craned her neck. No one was out driving yet. Maybe the inclement weather would force the bishop to cancel his visit. (From: The Amish Baker by Marie E. Bast).

Writer's block comes from not researching enough, so when that happens, it's time to get busy and research, research, and do more research.

I love writing and crafting a story. I'm not good with flower arrangement, sewing a dress, drawing, or sports, but I have studied story for 20 years and can word-smith a compelling novel. I enjoy the art and craft of planning, outlining, and writing a story. And I get to visit interesting places, research the area and meet the people that gives my stories depth and breath.

Just keep writing and submitting. And try not to take constructive criticism and rejection personal. We all have been there. I took every rejection and read it over and over and tried to learn from it and correct the errors. I entered contest after contest and learned from the feedback from judges and editors, until finally in 2015, I won first place in the category of contemporary in the RWA COFW Ignite the Flame Contest. Have faith, you too can do it.

Currently, I am writing book 2 in the Washington Iowa Amish Series. I'm very excited about it. The characters seem to have jumped onto the page and are anxious to share their lives with the reader. And some of the characters from book 1 will also pop back in so the reader can catch up on what's happening in their lives.

I can visit a place, walk around, talk to the people, and soon story lines start popping into my brain. I always carry a tablet and pen around because lines start forming as I think about a story or a person in a story. I will also jolt down notes about scenery and setting.

I grew up on a farm in Illinois near the Amish and admired how well-kept their yards always were, and I loved to see them go places in their buggies. From then on, the Amish have intrigued me. Now, I live 76 miles from Kalona, Iowa, where we visit several times a year, and the setting for my book, The Amish Baker.
