Darlene Duncan I create the world of my story. I am in control. I decide who lives, who the heroes are, who the villains are, and what happens in that world. When there is so little in the real world that we have control over, being able to control things in a story can be very cathartic.
Darlene Duncan Write! Don't just talk about writing. Do the work. Once the work is done be very careful about who you let read your work. Several years ago, I let a friend review a rough draft. I was just looking for feedback on whether the story idea of a good one and if I was moving in the right direction with the story. What I got was a scathing critique that was so vicious the only thing I wrote for two years was the grocery list. Don't put yourself through that. It takes time to recover from an experience like that.
Darlene Duncan At the moment, I'm not actively working on anything. There are a variety of stories percolating on the back burner in my mind. As of yet none of them have jumped forward and said, "Me. Me. Write me."
Darlene Duncan The idea for my most recent book, The Legend of Erin Foster, came to me after reading an editorial on the issue of lesbians / gays being treated as second class citizens. This was more than twenty years ago. Though the laws have changed, little has changed about acceptance in our society.
Darlene Duncan I would go to Pern and I would be a Dragonrider with the ability to communicate with all dragons.
