J.D. Cortese My upcoming book has been with me for years and it had not one but two beginnings in my own life. One day in early 1978, I was in Buenos Aires and crossing the downtown avenue that faces the Argentine National Congress, when I was almost run over by a light-blue Ford Falcon—not unlike those in this novel—that carried secret police with their guns out the windows and pointing to the streets. A few months later I would be there again, in that same corner, this time celebrating the country’s victory in the Soccer World Cup.

I have always wanted to come back to that insane moment of extremes and change something—anything—to avoid all the pain that military dictatorship inflicted on innocent Argentines. Over the years, and even from abroad, the story kept growing. While working on another book, I found out about the two meteorites— and yes, all the news and stories mentioned in the book about two, and then maybe one, meteorites hitting a mountain near Argentina just before the World Cup are not fiction. This fantastic event slowly added to the tale’s layers of time travel, beyond my original plan of writing a romantic Young Adult novel.

Books are also what happens when we are busy writing other books.
