I'm getting more inspired by the day, but I can remember my 9th grade literature teacher writing a comment on something I wrote. That may have been the first spark.

I was on a plane and letting my mind wander. I had a bit of blurry vision looking out the window and the idea hit me. I wondered about it for another ten minutes then began writing notes. I almost immediately had the beginning and end, it just took another three years before the whole story came into focus.
