When I was a teenager, my parents went to Chicago for a week. It was just the two of them and they said they were going to visit a friend of my mother's. However, my mother never mentioned a friend in Chicago before the trip and never mentioned her afterwards. I once asked her how her friend was doing and she said she didn't know what I was talking about. So, what did my parents really do during that week? Did they even go to Chicago?

Lower your expectations. Expecting too much from your writing will cause you to freeze up because you give yourself an unattainable goal. By lowering your expectations, you allow yourself to write something messy and less than perfect. Then once you've gotten your ideas on paper, you can begin to shape it into the best story it can be.
