No one was writing quite the book I wanted to read. Historical action and adventure fiction but set back in time. Trouble was, when I was at school we were taught the British history started with the Romans and even then I knew there was a great expanse of pre history not even touched upon. I mean, you can't move on the high street SF/Fantasy shelves without bumping into an ancient Roman based novel. They are great in their own way (I particularly like Simon Scarrow's work)bBut back from there is virtually an undiscovered country.
It's a great area for a writer as there is very little factual information and an imaginative mind can really spread its wings there. But I still wanted it based in fact so spent months researching before 'jumping' back to the dawn of the rise of mankind.
I am also steeped in military history from around the time of the Falklands War (1982) which gave me my initial jumping off point for DANNU'S MAN and so the novel was born.
