I deal with writer's block by setting aside a precise time each day to write and I write something new, even if it's just a few sentences. Sometimes rereading the previous scene or chapter helps to stimulate ideas on how to proceed.

I find being a writer helps me make sense of the world. I hope through the development of believable characters and the use of language I help the reader also make sense of the world.

Read in your genre. If you want to write historical novels read historical fiction, especially of the same period. Also, read authors you admire and want to emulate. Use them for inspiration and as teachers.

I am still focused on the World War II period. I am working on a novel about a woman who intercepts enemy codes during the war. She is in the Women's Army Corps. She has had to keep this work secret for years. Finally she reveals her work to an interviewer from a popular magazine. However, she knows she has secrets that she never wants to reveal.

I was interested in World War II, a period of enormous upheaval that changed everyone's life. At a time when bigotry was manifested in the extreme across Europe prejudice sadly existed on the home front. I wanted to write about a young woman who had to face prejudice and overcome it. I knew Portland, my hometown, built Liberty Ships for the war effort and women took the nontraditional job of a welder on these ships. That was a perfect job for my character.
