Write as much as you can. If it's your first story and you don't think you'll do anything with it, but you're really excited to do something new, jump ship and do the thing you want. I wrote six or seven lengthy things that I left unfinished because I wasn't enjoying them, or felt they weren't good enough, or wanted to start something else. Eventually, I got better and became committed enough to stay with the one that was good enough, that was worth the effort

Honestly, it doesn't effect me that much. Once I start a story, I get pretty into it. Editing block I tend to get more, and I get around this by breaking it up into achievable chunks; just two pages today or whatever

For Hayley Soon, my novel due out in March, it orginally began as an attempt to get the different corners of my brain encapsulated in different characters all on a road trip, but slowly these characters merged into just two or three and the road trip idea was ditched
