Sharon Gloger Friedman I'm enjoying a sampling of historical fiction: What the Wind Knows, As the Poppies Bloom, My Dear Hamilton, and The Gown are among my summer reads.
Sharon Gloger Friedman My maternal grandparents, great aunts and great uncles all worked in the garment industry in the early 1900s. I grew up listening to their stories about working in the sweatshops of New York City and the long-term effects of the Triangle Fire. Those stories were the seeds for Ashes. Although the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire happened before my relatives came to this country and the Raisky’s story is different from my family’s, Ashes is meant to pay tribute to all those who toiled in the sweatshops of New York City hoping for a better life in America.
