Reading old newspapers is a favorite tactic. I love to read about legal battles, obituaries, advertisements and who's performing and where. My current novel is set in 1915, so newspapers from that year are full of exciting ideas.

Don't let the idea of writing overwhelm you. Take baby steps. I took a writing class at a local community college. It inspired me to take what was rattling around in my brain and put it down on paper. My first writing efforts were published in a genealogy newsletter. Not the big time, but the editor made me feel special, and I had something to show on my publishing resume.

My current novel is a murder mystery set in 1915 San Diego during the Panama-California Exposition. The protagonist is a young woman who is learning to fly at Glenn Curtis' Flying School and working as a columnist at a factitious San Diego newspaper, "The Herald."
