I was actually working on a non book related project when I came up with the idea. I was writing some character sketches for a board game I was producing and I came up with a character that I liked. I decided to write a short piece about him and it spawned into an entire novel.

I think the worst thing a writer can do is sit around and wait for inspiration. Creativity is spawned by continuous effort. The most important thing any aspiring writer should do is schedule in time everyday to write. Routine and habit will get your creative juices flowing.

Read! Read everything, especially things that are outside of your prefered reading taste or genre. I love reading. I don't think there is anything better than a good book.

No other art form has infinite possibility. I've tried my hand at a number of different creative outlets. I've tried my hand at film production and music to name a few of the creative outlets available, but all of these mediums suffer from limitations: lack of a budget or the right equipment. But writing is the only medium that has the lowest barrier to entry and the an infinite resource. So grab a pen or a laptop and let your dreams run wild.

Writers block doesn't exist if you don't believe in Write the first thing that comes into your head and keep moving forward. Writer's block is caused by doubt and uncertainty. If you doubt what you are doing or you are unsure of what to write then you are probably falling into the self fulfilling prophecy of writers block. I suffered from this affliction for many years, then I stopped caring if I wrote a perfect sentence and just started to plow forward. Save the self doubt and uncertainty for the editing process, that's where self loathing is a worthy attribute.
