The most recent book I released, "A Little Christmas Pretense," was inspired by the question: "what if Cinderella worked in a publishing house?" It was an interesting question that I really enjoyed working through. It was especially fun to see some of my favorite holiday spots in Kansas City through the lens of my characters and my readers.

Anything can inspire me to write. Someone told a story in church that had me going, "ooh! That would be a great novel idea!" A lot of times, my inspiration comes from "what if...?" questions. In my current series, the question was "What if the idea of old, new, borrowed, and blue was applied not just to the items a bride brings to the wedding but also to the guests who come?"

I'm working on the Lucky Sweethearts series based on the adage "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue."

I love being able to look through the eyes of another person. So, when I have my characters in challenging situations, it's really cathartic to be able to empathize with them. I have to sit back and ask myself if I would do the same thing in their situations. Sometimes, that answer is no, but a lot of times, that answer is yes.

When I have writer's block, I think through the scene. Usually what has happened is I've stopped believing in the motivations (a tip I learned from Orson Scott Card). So, I usually step back, look at what I wrote, and see if there's something bothering me about it. Then, I rewrite it to see what changes.
