My book ideas usually come from fragments of ideas that coalesce to a full novel (or short story) idea. Lately, an idea for a new mystery series combined with an existing character of mine as the detective, and I'm really excited to start outlining it!

Don't feel the need to stick to one piece of literature. Write short stories, a book, a play. Jump around and get more experience. Test out things that don't work and be okay with learning from them. Enter contests so you can get feedback (and practice having a thick skin) and learn more about your craft.

I generally have trouble writing if I'm otherwise low energy or stressed, so I try to deal with those emotions in healthy ways. I often find that being out and about (in a car, while walking, on a bus, etc.) sparks my imagination, so I often default to taking my dog on a long walk to try to kick start my creative energy.
