Lately, it's been a matter of researching topics I think are interesting. I watch a lot of true crime shows, listen to true crime podcasts, and read a ton of Stephen King. The good thing is inspiration can come from anywhere. I formed the idea for an entire novel I'd still love to write someday from a lamp I saw while walking across campus in college. I like to find the smallest detail possible in my current surroundings and see what kind of story I can create from there.

Do it! Most people don't believe they can reach their goal of publishing and that fear stops them from starting. Don't be afraid to start! Think in terms of smaller goals at first. If you sit down to a blank page and think, "This needs to be a best-seller one day," you're never going to write a word. Instead, try thinking, "I'd like to fill a page today." Set small, realistic goals. Most importantly: just write.

There are so many ways to handle writer's block, I'm considering writing a completely separate book about it! Get a change of scenery! Go to a bookstore, coffee shop, library, or anywhere you know helps you focus on a task. Turn off your wifi! Deactivate your Facebook. Go for a walk! Listen to music that amps you up. Watch a TV show with a particularly compelling plot. Immerse yourself in someone else's worldview. The biggest thing is to get outside yourself, and then sit down and start writing. The quality doesn't matter in your first draft; the word count does.
