Matthew Caracciolo My brain is flooded with ideas. Eventually the levies have to burst sometime and out pours some writing. I don't have a choice.
Matthew Caracciolo Ha! I can tell you what's not great about being a writer. Looking at every day life so dramatically, considering the dramatic angles you could talk about something. Every conversation, every life development. It's like an ongoing journal in your head. Maybe everyone does this, I don't know, but if you're a writer you're tempted to write it down in a public setting. Scary!
Matthew Caracciolo Read as a writer! If there's an author you particularly like and you want to emulate him/her, read a book of theirs and discern their strategies. Beyond the plot details, how is the author achieving their success? What are they doing with dialogue? Transitions? How long are their descriptions? How is the book, not necessarily the plot, constructed, you know? The more you can read a book like this, the better you will be able to put those strategies to work in your own writing.
Matthew Caracciolo My wife and I spent two years teaching English in South Korea, which is not that uncommon of a thing, but I thought I'd accumulated enough unique experiences that I could make an interesting book out of our time there. I did some research and I wasn't finding many boots-on-the-ground type of travelogues about South Korea. I found my niche!
