The land, our traditions, and people are constant sources of inspiration.

I just finished “Spider Lake” the sequel to “Figure Eight” and it should be available before Christmas.

My second career was in conservation, and I planned and implemented wetland restoration projects. On one project a crowd was in attendance for a “ribbon cutting” the day before we were to begin. During the event a famous conservationist asked me, “How do you go about restoring a wetland of over 1,000 acres?” I thought about it and replied, “One square foot at a time.” The same idea applies to writing—one sentence at a time. Everybody has a story to tell, and we all lose if it never gets written. The important part is to start and keep going.

Without question it is all the wonderful people I have met. I really enjoy talking to folks about their experiences and traditions. Reading has been one of my life’s great pleasures and it thrills me that so many readers have enjoyed my stories.

I do something different that requires my attention and hands—fix something that need fixing, cut wood, or work on the tractor (a never-ending source of amusement). When I am trying to work a story through I do something that allows me room to think about it, but gives me something else to do like sitting in a duck marsh, fishing, or driving around the countryside to “see what I can see."

It was well past midnight when a 911 call came in reporting an armed intruder breaking into a home. The officer who arrived on the scene approached the house, weapon drawn, ordering a subject trying to hide in the doorway to show themselves and their hands, and a shot rang out.

I would travel to Albion, Wisconsin and visit the 1918 world of Sterling North. I would like to experience life and community minus so many of today’s complexities during a time that shaped the future of our country. I know that “Rascal” is a memoir so I hope it counts anyway. It is my favorite book.

“Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens, "Dead Big Dawg” by Victoria Houston, “Rules of Prey” by John Sanford, and “Right off the Reel” edited by Dave Evenson.

Every summer my family spends time together in Northern Wisconsin. In addition to musky fishing, we read a new mystery by a certain author. One year, the author didn't publish a new book, so I told my family I'd write one. That was how it started. Figure Eight weaves together events and people I've encountered throughout my life.
