This is much more challenging when speaking as most of us (including me!) lack the attention span to actually listen to what another is saying. Writers have a captive audience and the time to carefully choose what they want to say to that audience.

I take a day off. The next day, while doing something monotonous like swimming, I think about where I am stuck. I then try to allow any thought, no matter if only slightly related, flow into the thought process. If it sticks to that 'black hole' or emptiness that surrounds writer's block and starts to make an impact, I try it on for size. If it doesn't, it gets sucked up into the inky darkness and I try again. Eventually something takes shape.
