I enjoy providing information that is helpful/useful to people, something funny where it brings a smile or better yet a laugh, or that people can relate due to a shared life experience, and also to share a very different experience and perspective.

As I progressed in my career, I kept getting assigned more leadership responsibilities for larger and larger teams. I had to shift my focus from the technical arena to management/leadership. I received excellent company leadership training and also read many books and articles. The reading material available spoke about the things one needed to do, or the characteristics you needed to have, to be a good leader, but I was not getting a clear understanding as to how to actually do these things: to gain the respect of others, handling disagreements and discontent, dealing with poor performers, etc. So how do you really build team spirit? How do you gain the respect of your peers and team members? How do you increase your value to your manager and company? I wanted to write a book that would be more meaningful, understandable, and applicable to readers. I was surprised and happy to see that reviews by Kirkus (Nov’19), San Francisco Book Review (Dec’19), and Publishers Weekly/BookLife Review (Jan‘20) appear to support this.

As covered in the book, in 2000, per directive by corporate, I needed to close-down a satellite office and lay off 20 systems engineers. I had to sit silently as the team, with whom I had celebrated for project successes as well as for happy hours, started filling the conference room, so I could inform them of the terrible news, then had to formally terminate each one of them.
