Katy Cage I'm currently working on The Foul and the Fair, the idea for which actually came to me in the middle of English class during my senior year of high school. We'd been reading Canterbury Tales—more specifically, The Wife of Bath's Tale. Ellesmere—the land where my story takes place—was named after the Ellesmere Manuscript. Chaucer's tale gave me the idea of a really ugly witch falling in love with a devilish rogue. I also incorporated elements of Macbeth (which offered inspiration for the book's title), and I borrowed some of the stereotypical concepts of witches from The Wizard of Oz (green skin, hooked nose, pointy hat).

You could say that this book is very much a conglomeration of other things—Canterbury, Macbeth, Oz, various European fairytales and mythology. I've just added my own spin to it.
Katy Cage There's really no limit to what inspires me. I write a lot of fantasy, so mythology, fairytales, and history definitely have a huge impact on my works. But so can everyday life. Real people can be the basis for my characters. Stories told to me by elderly relatives or wise friends can, too.

It's never about seeking out inspiration, or actively trying to be original. That's like creative suicide. Let inspiration find you.
Katy Cage No matter what, don't give up. Your writing is going to suck at first. Mine did, too. But if you keep working at it, you will improve. There is no specific strategy or method to use that will turn you into a professional. It's all about dedication and determination. Those are the keys to growth.
Katy Cage A few years ago, I would've said that writing itself is the best thing. I love doing it. But now, I'd say it's reading those messages and reviews from fans whose lives have been changed by my books. There is nothing more rewarding than the praise, encouragement, and support I get from my readers.
