Debra Bokur The Bone Field, which is Book Two in my Dark Paradise Mystery series, was born out of my fascination with recent news reports on present-day cults, yoga gurus and spiritual leaders, including John of God in South America, and a Boulder, Colorado-based Tibetan Buddhist Dance teacher who delved too far into darkness and was implicated in the suicide of a female student. These stories, along with the recent Jeffrey Epstein tale, made me curious about what inspires people—particularly young women—to become ensnared by charismatic leaders. In The Bone Field, a cult becomes the focus of a cold case involving multiple murders.
Debra Bokur Middle Earth in Lord of the Rings, full stop. I'd head straight for Fangorn forest.
Debra Bokur I'm hard at work on Book Three (as yet untitled) in my Dark Paradise Mystery series, and also working on a new book of literary fiction that crosses over into magical realism. When I'm not writing, I'm renovating an old inn that was built in 1862, and puttering in my finicky garden.
Debra Bokur I don't really believe in writer's block. Along the lines of advice from author Stephen Pressfield, who wrote (among many things) The War of Art, I think you get up, sit down, and go to work whether you feel like it or not. I'm usually juggling multiple projects—a magazine article deadline, research, a submission deadline for poetry or flash fiction, work on my current book—so if I'm not making progress in one arena, I'll switch to another. When I get stuck on a plot line, I take the problem with me on a long walk, and usually have a solution by the time I'm back at my desk.
