I get out into nature on a walk with my dog, and just try to quiet my mind. Invariably, something will pop into it. Of course, that "something" may be dumb...or not workable...or uninteresting. There's no law that says inspiration needs to be inspirational!

Let me put it this way: my former editor said that I should write fiction because I have such an active imagination! The idea for my main character simply popped into my head one day, then for the next few months (okay: YEARS), I worked on coming up with a plot and the other characters.
