I would follow Jesus when He walked this earth. Since I know the end of the story, I wouldn't abandon Him like His other disciples. And then, I would go back and undo the stupid mistakes in my life. That's a fantasy world many of us visit often.

How did a poor boy with a background like mine become an author? That question will be answered in a future book if the Lord keeps me around long enough. Scroll down past the endorsements on my home page to get a teaser about that story. https://kellymackmccoy.com/

Inspiration is an awesome thing to experience. But it ebbs and flows during the process of writing a book. I just have to keep writing and rewriting until it looks like I might know what I’m doing. I suspect I’m not the only writer out there who has this approach.

For me the best part is writing the end on the final page and sending the book off to the publisher. From there it's a fun journey as your book begins to pop up in places that you have no idea as to how it got there. And to get the feedback from readers who are impacted in such diverse ways is pretty humbling.

Since this is my first novel, most of my time is spent on marketing rather that on writing. Build and they will come, as the saying goes. But write and they don't care. You have to spend a lot of time and effort on letting people know about your book. To me, there's no point in writing other books unless a significant number of people are going to read them. Having said that, I do have another novel and a non-fiction book in the works.

My writing, like my life, has been a crazy, zig-zag course in finding out what works and what doesn’t by the long, tedious process of trial and error. Mostly error. The hardest learning curve for me has been the process of getting the story together without being concerned about the process or end result. That's where I got stuck and finally just filed the book away in a drawer. I just have to write and let those things take care of themselves. I couldn’t outline a novel before writing it if you held a gun to my head. I have to just write and see where it goes.

I’ve been advised and then learned the hard way anyway that you just have to sit down and write. Sounds easy. But strangely enough it’s not or we wouldn’t be so creative in avoiding doing it.

It's something I've had in mind to do for many years. It seemed natural to couch my stories in the framework of my occupation. I had a little different perspective to view life. A friend from my writers group, John Floyd Mills, suggested we partner together in writing a series of novels. I agreed but our styles we just too different and it didn't seem to work. So he went on to other things and I took up this project alone. The novel, like many others, ended up hidden in a dusty drawer for some time. When John went on to be with the Lord, that was the motivation I needed to dust it off and see it through to completion.
