Great question, Katy.
Quite a few poems in Noir have their roots in the nightimes of those early music days, subject wise at least.
Subconsciously I guess at least, the rhythms, halts and meters all flow from a music / lyric dynamic, how I hear them being performed in my head, I how I set them out.

I tend towards non-fiction, so it needs to be something that I can get passionate about and want to invest time in.

I am child of the 1960s, and searching the decade for notable events came across a name I had never heard of before—Medgar Evers.
Hungry for more knowledge about Medgar Evers I discovered a wealth of information, but, another name kept cropping up—Clyde Kennard. However, in nearly all of the books, magazines, and websites at the time, Clyde Kennard only received mention in two to three paragraphs or two to three pages.
Despite vigorous searching, I could find no books dedicated to Clyde Kennard’s journey, so I became determined and passionate about telling his story and his efforts to complete his higher education in his home state of Mississippi, at Mississippi Southern College (now University of Southern Mississippi).
So after more than ten years of detailed, painstaking research comes this book, The Life and Times of Clyde Kennard.
Clyde Kennard’s life is an uplifting and inspiring story of perseverance, and committed determination to right wrongs.
