David Kroese For me, the best thing about writing is the opportunity to share a deeply felt personal passion, about something truly wonderful, with others. My wife succinctly described these activities with, "The parks bring you so much joy, and you want to share that joy with others."
David Kroese I would plan my travel more efficiently with knowledge of these places. Three parks I highlight as "hidden gems" in the NPS are Chiricahua NM in southern Arizona, Colorado NM near Grand Junction, and Minuteman Missile NHS next to South Dakota's Badlands NP north (main) unit. I recently gave a presentation titled, "Hidden Gems of our National Park System" where I covered 43 parks or locations in our National Park System that I consider to be spectacular experiences largely unknown by the general public.
David Kroese Read as much as you can, for inspiration, ideas, and knowledge. I think the best and easiest way to write is on a subject the writer is deeply passionate about.
David Kroese I would like to write about all 54 national heritage areas, and also write additional material about some of the less well known aspects of our national parks.
David Kroese My then-72-year old mother, having noted social media posts during my exploration of the park system, asked me to write the story. I realized later she wanted to 'see' the parks through a story, my story. When I discovered that a narrative including all 400+ national park units had never been published, I committed to writing the first. There are many people that cannot see our parks in person, and many more who love the parks, but may never make it to Guam, American Samoa or the Alaskan Arctic. I hope my effort proves meaningful to some of them.
David Kroese Write the story you want to write, whatever that is. Don't worry about how good/bad it is. You can always delete a passage in the worst case. I find it a lot easier to write something I have to read, critique and edit than to write something ready for publication immediately. I agree that the key to writing is to write.
