Being able to inspire a young reader with tales of real kids who lived long ago, but who were very much like themselves. I want them to know even the smallest act of kindness or bravery can make an enormous difference in the lives around them. I believe a child can be the hero of his or her own story with a bit of inspiration from the pages of history.

Sometimes, a trip to a new location, or an "author's date" nearby (museum, festival, etc.) can spark my imagination. But other times, there's nothing like a writer's challenge like NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) to motivate me.

Currently I’m working on two more MG historical novels — one based on a little-known expedition involving a sea voyage and Spanish orphans, the other set in Bath, England, involving a refugee Huguenot girl. A third, set at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, is seeking a publisher!

I feel sorry for the kids in the Bible who have made a huge impact on others, but have no name or backstory — so I give them both. There are so many historical events, too, that pass unnoticed, especially that involve children. When I uncover a gem, I write their story.
