Denise Roig I had a writing teacher who once famously and memorably said that if writers waited to "get inspired" we'd never write anything. I personally think inspiration is over-rated. I'm a believer in sitting down at the empty screen and ... typing. If this sounds prosaic and mechanical, it's actually kind of magical.
Denise Roig I'm actually working on two things at the moment (though not nearly as much as I'd like to be, truth be told.) One is two connected novellas, competing (dueling?) narratives from a seventy-something Canadian woman (with a murky political past spent in Turkey) and her grown daughter, a rising star in Ontario politics. The other project is too new to really talk about. I just know it involves weddings!
Denise Roig My most recent collection of short stories is Brilliant. We'd been living in Abu Dhabi for a few months and I'd already begun writing freelance pieces for The National, the new (then) English-language newspaper. The more I was out in the city meeting people, observing the way various groups lived (Western expats, migrant workers from the Sub-Continent, Emiratis), the clearer it became that I needed to set some new short stories here. Abu Dhabi is a place of such extremes, such a strange country really, that it felt rich for fiction.
