Gary Hoffman The most interesting fictional couples are the ones who do not quite hook up: John Marcher and May in James's "Beast in the Jungle" or Winterbourne and Daisy Miller in his "Daisy Miller." Hard to beat Tony and Carmella in "The Sopranos" which I consider a novel written as a series. Mia and Jof in Bergman's "Seventh Seal" are loving without being too sentimental and then there is Bloom and Molly in Joyce's "Ulysses" but especially Molly in the Penelope chapter.
Gary Hoffman Regarding Pomegranate Gospel, I was inspired by Bill Maher because of something he said about the Bible that indicated he failed to see key nuances in the stories; so I started to write him a letter, and the letter became a chapter, and then that chapter spawned another, and then all my ideas about the Bible I have been developing in teaching it as literature in my college courses over almost thirty years came pouring out. Of course, that pour out was only a rough draft. Then the real work started.
