I usually come up with a new playlist and work on one of the multitude of plot bunnies I have lined up. Usually writing a few pages or a short story is able to get me out of my block, and I go back to whichever book has priority.

You don’t need a degree in English or Writing or Literature to be a professional writer. You don’t even need a degree! I have a two-year degree in general studies, although I focused on Film Production and Graphic Design. The main thing you need is an understanding of storytelling and a drive to be a writer.

Aside from finishing Smoke & Mist revisions, I’m writing another novel set in the same world. It’s called We Ignite the Mountains, and it’s set in a rural Tennessee town after a dragon attack. It’s coming out in fall 2019.

Everyone writes differently. When I was in college, I would go to the library after my evening swim and write for hours on the public computers. I still find that I write better in public - on airplanes, in coffee shops, and at libraries.

Smoke & Mist originally started as a tandem novel with my first critique partner. We wanted to write a dual-POV novel about a magical school in a magical contemporary world. I was living in St. Louis at the time, a town that is inherently magical in its own way, so that’s where it was set. In early drafts, Sarah, the main character, already had a pet dragon. I decided to change it a few drafts back so that she found the dragon egg and took care of it on-page.
