I grew up hearing stories from my immigrant grandparents about settling in a coal mining town, Cumberland, Wyoming in 1912. They spoke of the opportunity to work and excel, the friends they found in the other immigrant families, the winter blizzards, the dangers of coal mining, and the harsh life in this frontier town. I created a fictional story to honor my family before these memories disappeared forever.

Get up and leave the computer, or the writing pad, or wherever you're writing. Take a walk, weed the garden, fold the laundry. Writing is a process and when the words stop flowing, the brain doesn't necessarily stop working. Ideas come anytime, anywhere. Sometimes changing location and activity is all it takes.
